In the past, biodegradable hydraulic oils often went hand in hand with compromises for technology and users – but those days are over. HYDRAULIC OIL AND THE ENVIRONMENT

There is a duty of care that must be respected when working with construction machinery, especially in environmentally sensitive areas, such as bodies of water or groundwater areas. This applies to the hydraulic system in particular. Biodegradability becomes a major concern if hydraulic oil leaks into the environment. It is then hugely beneficial if the oil is biodegradable, as the damage can be limited and much more easily rectified.

RECOGNISED EAL STANDARDS

MOTOREX ECOSYNT HEPR meets the standards for biodegradability in accordance with OECD 301 B and the Swedish standard SS 15 54 34 for environmentally friendly hydraulic fluids. To meet the Swedish standard, 95% of the substances in the fluid must be biodegradable in accordance with OECD 301 B. This means that ECOSYNT HEPR is an EAL, or environmentally acceptable lubricant. Lubricants of this type fulfil the criteria for biodegradability, do not bioaccumulate, and cause minimal harm to the aquatic environment.

PIONEERING PAO MOLECULES

ECOSYNT HEPR is based on polyalphaolefins (PAO) – specially designed synthetic hydrocarbons that consist solely of carbon and hydrogen atoms. Unlike conventional mineral-based oils, they are therefore completely free of unwanted substances such as sulphur, salts or acids. PAO molecules are 100% saturated. Its non-polar (non-adhesive) behaviour means that the hydraulic oil does not bond with other substances, such as water, and remains stable for a long period. The low coefficient of friction also reduces internal friction and consequently the temperature in the hydraulic system.

One particularly promising and realistic possibility for the future is a synthetic chemical process to produce polyalphaolefins from CO2 – i.e. completely fossil-free. This is yet another benefit that undeniably makes ECOSYNT HEPR a next-generation hydraulic oil.
