Modern, generally large-displacement natural gas (NG) engines are used in modular systems to generate electricity and heat. They have now achieved peak levels of overall efficiency. The different gaseous fuels and engine designs require special motor oils.
Whereas the average output of NG engine-powered generator sets was once 50 to 500 kW, it is now 500 kW to 9 MW*. Progress in combustion technology, typified by high-pressure and high-temperature technologies, has increased efficiency and reduced emissions. The combustion of natural gas and other gases obtained from natural sources (“special gases”), such as refined or crude biogas, digester gas, landfill gas, methane and wood gas produces acidic combustion products that have to be absorbed and neutralized by the engine’s motor oil. Consequently, the following factors are key when selecting a suitable motor oil:
I Engine type / installed materials
I NG / NG quality used
I Exhaust aftertreatment
I Duty type
I Experience / repairs
I Installation history / oil analyses
If sooting hydrocarbon molecules of the type found abundantly in special gases are combusted, there is a high risk of deposits forming on pistons and valves if an unsuitable engine oil is used. If coke builds up on valves or if piston rings seize in their grooves, the engine will quickly lose its equilibrium.
MOTOREX's EVOLUBE range is the professional solution for all NG engine needs. The high-grade, extremely temperature-resistant formulations use monograde base oils. Combined with innovative additives—some particularly low-ash, depending on the product—all EVOLUBE motor oils exhibit beneficial features such as
I high heat resistance
I outstanding oxidation stability
I lasting neutralization
I low evaporation loss
The NG motor oils are precisely tailored to the requirements of all popular engine manufacturers.
Whether your installation is large or small, has a naturally aspirated or turbocharged engine with aluminum or steel cylinders and possibly even a multi-stage exhaust aftertreatment system, MOTOREX will support you every step along the way as you evaluate the optimal lubricant for each case. This will follow a prescribed sequence involving an on-site visit and take account of the full history of the installation. The service package also includes periodic oil analyses—a key factor in ensuring trouble-free, efficient NG engine operation. Contact your MOTOREX partner for more information.
