They have special characteristics, so have special requirements in terms of lubrication: motorcycles with modern V2 and V4 engines. For the iconic drive system, we have created a motor oil that is perfectly tailored to these increasingly popular drive concepts – the fully synthetic V-SYNT 4T.
No other engine concept has changed perception – and reality – as much as V engines. V2 engines in particular were once regarded as delivering more torque, but also as more temperamental and raw than four-cylinder in-line engines of the same size. A reluctant throttle response, bucking at low speeds and pronounced load change reactions contributed to the V2's cult status and made the bikes that had one particularly enjoyable to ride.
Today, on the other hand, the V engine is also about “a lot of power in a compact space”. Electronic engine management, design advances and very fine manufacturing tolerances have made the V engine more user-friendly. It has also become the first choice for many superbikes. Motorcyclists don’t just buy modern V2 and V4 bikes for sentimental reasons. They also enjoy the pure performance of these units, including the unique sound of the engine.
Nevertheless, some special characteristics remain: V engines, which generally have their cylinders in a row, still present more of a challenge in thermal terms than purely in-line engines of a similar size. Large V2s in particular have rather voluminous combustion chambers. While this has virtually no effect on lubrication requirements for high-capacity cruisers, which tend to be ridden at lower speeds, today’s V2 and V4 hyperbikes are something else altogether. They are often ridden at high speeds, which are associated with correspondingly high piston speeds.
Given these tough requirements, many manufacturers prescribe synthetic motor oils for such units. Synthetic motor oils do not contain certain hydrocarbon chains and are therefore considered “cleaner” than conventional mineral oils, thus preventing the build-up of sludge and residue. Their key advantage, however, is a far better compatibility with additives. These oil additives improve the physical effect of the lubricant.
With V-SYNT 4T, we have created a lubricant that is optimally adapted to the special characteristics of modern V2 and V4 engines. For example, special hydrocarbon compounds in the additives ensure that the lubricating film remains fluid at low temperatures and does not slide off at high temperatures – i.e. at top speeds. So V-SYNT 4T can still do its job at full throttle and offers optimal wear protection for engine at very high temperatures. At the same time, this characteristic enables optimum power delivery at any speed range.
These special advantages are not only needed in the engine: gears, the primary drive and the behaviour of an oil bath clutch also derive long-term benefit from V-SYNT 4T, which meets JASO MA2 standards, among others.
The excellent fluidity of V-SYNT 4T ensures that the fully synthetic oil reaches the areas that need to be lubricated more quickly. So cold starts place considerably less strain on the engine than with a conventional mineral oil of the same viscosity. At lower temperatures, the synthetic oil also exhibits less “internal friction”. This means fuel consumption can be clearly reduced compared with mineral motor oil.
In addition, life is that bit easier for riders of V2 and V4 hyperbikes: many manufacturers allow longer oil change intervals due to the improved lubrication and reduction in residue associated with synthetic motor oil.
We offer V-SYNT 4T in SAE 15W/50 and 20W/50 viscosities. It is suitable for the community of high-capacity cruiser riders as well as for the ever-growing hyperbike segment with their powerful V engines. We have set ourselves the task of meeting the challenges of this engine concept and developing our own products for these special requirement profiles. Temperature, pour point, fluidity, oxidation stability, formation of foam, cleaning capacity and other parameters are precisely matched to the technology and its characteristics.
As a fully synthetic lubricant, V-SYNT 4T also shows its advantages with regard to future emission specifications: if a powerful V engine runs at optimal efficiency in all operating conditions, this will reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The fact that we are serving a segment experiencing dynamic growth with the new V-SYNT 4T is evident on the roads, without even looking at the registration figures. More and more motorcyclists are looking for a distinctive V engine with lots of power and modern technology. This growing demand and the ever-increasing range of V2 and V4 hyperbikes have led to a growing interest in high-performance lubricants.
And last but not least, V-SYNT 4T meets the specifications of well-known manufacturers such as Harley-Davidson, Ducati and other brands that build bikes with the unmistakable qualities of a V engine.
